Local Names at Logan

April 1, 2019

With his company becoming the new retail landlord at Logan Airport, Paul McGinn wanted more local names in the mix. Think Kelly’s Roast Beef — it opened at Logan in November — or the Sullivan’s burger stand on Castle Island, which is coming later this year.

The MarketPlace Development president also wanted to incorporate the city’s sports teams. The Boston Bruins became a logical first choice, in part because MarketPlace is already working with Delaware North, another Jacobs family venture, to help fill a few of its Logan spaces.

Last week, McGinn was joined by a big Bruins and Delaware North contingent to celebrate the grand opening of Delaware North’s new sports bar at Logan, calledBruins Bar, in Terminal A. Among those in attendance: Charlie Jacobs, the CEO of Delaware North’s Boston businesses; Amy Latimer, president of the Delaware North-owned TD Garden; Boston Bruins president Cam Neely; and current players Kevan Miller and Sean Kuraly.

Massport executives John Pranckevicius and Ed Freni joined the fun — as did the U14 Winthrop girl’s hockey team, fresh off a state championship.

“We have been loud and clear that we were looking for, hopefully, to have some strong Boston icons, like the Bruins,” represented at Logan, says McGinn, whose firm is a division of New England Development.

“The world that we move around in has become pretty homogeneous. Drive down the road anywhere, you have a lot of stores and restaurants that look the same. While that gives some people comfort with familiarity, I think most people want to have a sense that someplace is unique.” — JON CHESTO
